There are a plethora of characters, plots, and sub-plots to keep readers engaged, but fear not! Mills does a great job looping readers back in with reminders of who's who and what's what and plenty of red herrings that keep us enthralled and guessing. I remember when Hurricane Harvey hit how dams and reservoirs in the Houston area failed (not my husband's! I swear!). He frequently traveled there as it was built and then inspected (and reinspected and reinspected) to finally open years after ground was broken. The premise of CONCRETE EVIDENCE really intrigued me as I have been a dam widow when my husband was a project manager for a reservoir and dam build in south Texas. I had no inkling of whodunit and was embarassingly off the mark. DiAnn Mills has written an excellent suspense novel with an intricate plot where everyone's a suspect and danger is around every turn. I love the note from the creator of the original show at the end of the book. I can't wait to read the next one I think that I may have to rewatch the show. I could hear the voices of all the characters speaking. The writers and illustrators did a great job bringing the shows characters to the page. The only clue left behind is the name of her estranged father. The protagonist is abandoned, afraid and powerless, by her own mother at age sixteen. His blood, though, was warm, his fingers tasty, and he reminded her of a sloppy joe. At any rate – sys the protagonist – he stank of rotten eggs and didn’t brush his teeth. This won’t save him from his fatal end: instead of sex, he ends up lifeless in his sleeping tent. The baby sitter’s first boyfriend at camp collects exuvia, the remains of a bug moulting, and nibbles on them as if they were candy. When the girl’s mother returns, all she finds is a heap of bones, picked clean, on the living room floor. «I had my teeth but I was too small to swallow the bones». There’s a fair-haired baby sitter singing a lullaby to her ward, a girl, and gently strokes her head. Alas, I did understand it, after all! I just couldn’t accept that’s how the story started. Is it possible I can’t understand what I’m reading? I tried again. I stopped at page two and wondered just how rusty my English is. I opened Bones & All– Camille DeAngelis‘ book – and started reading. In particular, we waited for the pickling season when my mother would pickle unripe, green mangoes in a blisteringly hot chili sauce. From the time the trees began to bud in April, we waited with eager anticipation for the many ways the fruits would make their delicious appearance in our meals. The mango trees played a significant role in my childhood. Much of my summer was spent climbing these trees with my siblings and our friends. My childhood home was located in what was formerly a mango grove, and every house in our neighborhood had at least one mango tree our home was supremely fortunate to have not one but four full-grown mature trees. In our home, this meant a ready and steady supply of fresh mangoes straight from the tree. It was a special time for another reason also: summer was mango season. The days were long and filled with food, friends, and books. Growing up in India, this was my favorite season. |
